Hello My Name Is...

Mary Mertz Pic

‚ÄčWelcome!  I am beginning my third year teaching seventh grade English at SHHS.  I grew up in a 200-year-old Pennsylvania stone farmhouse and earned my B.A. degree from Juniata College and my M.Ed. degree from Sunbridge College in Chestnut, NY.  I taught seventh and eighth grades at Susquehanna Waldorf school in Pennsylvania. I moved to Kansas in 2002 with my husband, Tom, a Salina native who teaches computer science at K-State Salina.  I have worked as a substitute teacher in Salina while taking classes at Emporia State University to obtain my Kansas teaching license. My husband and I have three sons, all in their twenties. I am an enthusiastic gardener.  In addition to raising vegetables and flowers at home I run an after-school children’s gardening program at the Salina Food Bank. I also love reading and ballroom dancing.
